STERLING, Illinois (WQAD)-

A family is being reunited with their late father’s Purple Heart medal this Veterans Day.

James Beu was wounded by a Japanese sniper during World War II but, as WQAD in Illinois reports, his family has no idea how it went missing from their Elgin, Illinois home.

This summer, collectors saw the medal in an estate sale in Sterling, Illinois. Working with the American Legion, the collectors tracked down Beu’s son, Burke.

Tuesday, Beu’s family from Colorado and Illinois gathered in Denver to be reunited with this significant piece of family history.

“My plan was to visit them at the cemetery,” Burke said. “But this is where they would want me to be.”
